STEVE AND CAROLE IN VENCE

Magazines About Vence

In addition to books and brochures & fliers about Vence, there are also some magazines and newsletters that have been published over the years about the town. I think there may be a few dating back to the 1930s but I’ve been unable to find any of those. Here you’ll find information about several different magazines related to Vence which have been published since the 1970s.

First is a small “homemade” magazine from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s called Vence Nature. It was published by an organization called the Association pour la Protection de la Nature et de l’Environnement – Vence et environs (APNE) (Association for the Protection of Nature and the Environment – Vence and surrounding areas). It is devoted, as the name of both the magazine and the association imply, to environmental causes here in Vence.

Next is a series of magazines published by the city administration with information and articles aimed at the local residents. Over the years these publications have taken different names and forms. My guess is that as the mayors and administrations changed, so too did the publications. I have issues from five distinct periods.

1984: three issues from this year under the name “Vence.”
1989-1993: ten issues from this period under the name “Vence Magazine.”
1994: one issue from this year under the name “La Lettre du Maire.”
1999: one issue from this year under the name “La Lettre du Mois.”
2000-Present: the current magazine known as “Vence & Vous.”

In 1988, the Départment des Alpes-Martimes published a magazine titled “VENCE et son canton” with information about Vence, Saint-Jeannet, and La Gaude. It says, “Première Edition,” but I have yet to run across any further editions, so this may have been the only one.

A similar, but much smaller publication, dedicated to seniors in Vence is called “La Gazette des Seniors.” It’s been in publication since 2017 and continues today.

Next is a magazine known as Vence et ses Environs. To date there have been 60 issues published. I even published an article in one (#60)! The earliest issue I have is #11 which was published in June of 2003. The magazine is published by the Association Vence and its surroundings during the 20th century a local organization here in Vence. Their goal is to write about subjects related to Vence – using archives, testimonies, photos, audible pieces and other elements. They usually publish two or three issues per year.

The only place I’ve ever seen these sold is at the E.Leclerc Espace Culturel book and multimedia store on the Grand Jardin here in Vence. It’s been easy to find the current version of this magazine but older copies are hard to come by. I’ve searched on the web many times but never found any for sale. However, at the 2024 Book Fair in Vence I met Raymond Ardisson, the man behind the magazine, who was selling a few back copies. I immediately purchased them and asked if he had any others. He told me to come back in the afternoon, which I did, and he had another stack for me. So now I have almost 1/2 of all the available issues in my collection.

At the end of 2025 a new magazine was published by an organization called “Vitrines de Vence” dedicated to showcasing the wide breadth of shops, boutiques and artists in Vence.

Finally there is a “souvenir program,” a magazine devoted to the Paris-Dakar car race in 1985.
