STEVE AND CAROLE IN VENCE

Vence Nature Magazine

I don’t know a lot about this little magazine except that it was published by the Association pour la Porotectin de la Nature et de l’Environnement – Vence et environs (APNE) (Association for the Protection of Nature and the Environment – Vence and surrounding areas). It is devoted, as the name of both the magazine and the association imply, to environmental causes here in Vence.

The first issue is dated at the beginning of 1975. I’m not sure how long it was in publication. The last issue I have is #18 which is dated summer of 1981. I’m missing issues #7, #13, #16 & #17.

I purchased these copies from a longtime Vence resident and had never heard of the publication before he showed them to me. Most of the issues are just 12 pages long, they are printed in black and white (with a third solid color sometimes) and the pages are stapled together on the left hand side.

In his introduction to the organization and magazine in the first issue, the president, Pierre Fouques, says:

“Can we manage to reach a future balance between the expanding industrial and agricultural production — producing wealth and material well-being in affluent countries — and what should be the ultimate goal of these efforts: the physical, intellectual, and moral health of individuals?

“We believe that for the spiritual elevation of humanity, the anarchy that has prevailed for decades in the economic organization of our industrial civilization must come to an end.

“We must rethink, recycle, and no longer discard, because from now on raw materials and energy are rationed and traded. And yet we know that the economic machine must keep running, despite its conflicting imperatives — the encroaching machinery and a voracious population growth.

“If a transformation must occur, it should happen without a major crisis, and for that we need to master science and technology, define priorities, so that humanity does not remain the worst predator of the biosphere, and so that, ultimately, people feel at ease in their own skin.

“If we fight against all forms of pollution, it is because it has been scientifically demonstrated that they are, among other nuisances, partly or entirely responsible for certain types of cancer, a current scourge. And we must indeed trust the ecologists who demonstrate to us daily that nature can no longer recycle the waste of all kinds that overwhelm us with nuisances.”
