The perched villages of the Alpes-Maritimes department are among the most enchanting sights in all of France. These small, medieval hilltop communities, perched high above the valleys and coastlines, have been shaped by centuries of history. Most of these villages were initially built during the Middle Ages, a time when security was a constant concern. By building on elevated ground, communities could better protect themselves from invaders.

The setting of these perched villages is nothing short of spectacular. The Alpes-Maritimes department stretches from the shores of the Mediterranean to the high peaks of the southern Alps, offering an incredible variety of landscapes. Olive groves, vineyards, forests, and fields of wildflowers often surround many of these perched villages.

While all these villages share some common features, each one is unique and interesting in its own way. Some are vibrant and full of life with cafés, restaurants, boutiques, and shops. Others are almost deserted, the population having long ago migrated towards bigger towns with more opportunities, services, and modern conveniences, leaving behind quiet streets and shuttered windows.

Four of the villages highlighted in this book (Gourdon, Saorge, Sainte-Agnès, and Coaraze) are officially recognized by the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). This prestigious distinction is held by fewer than 200 villages nationwide.

As Carole and I approached Peillon, we could see it perched high above the surrounding landscape like a weathered crown resting on a rugged hill. We parked the car and spent the next several hours wandering aimlessly in the village. I was enthralled with the steep, twisting, narrow cobblestone streets, the ancient stone houses with tiled roofs, the quiet charm of the ivy-covered walls and shaded archways, and the small, sunlit courtyards where time seemed to stand still. I’d never seen anything like it.

Since that first visit to Peillon, I’ve visited every perched village in the Alpes-Maritimes department, most of them numerous times. I’ve spent countless hours exploring every twist and turn of each village. I’ve read dozens of books researching their history and searching for every last tidbit of information I could find.

These villages offer something for everyone. Photographers will be thrilled by the light and views, history lovers will find stories in every street, foodies can indulge in local delicacies, and hikers will discover trails that reveal the quiet wonders of the region.

There’s also something magical about simply being there. Watching the sun set over the hills, hearing the church bells ring in the evening air, or sipping a glass of rosé while looking out over a patchwork of fields and rooftops. It’s a kind of quiet joy that’s hard to find elsewhere.

While each village has its own personality, together they form a network of treasures waiting to be explored. Some are closer to the coast, offering views over the sparkling Mediterranean, while others are deeper in the hills, surrounded by forests and alpine meadows. The journey between them is part of the adventure, as winding roads reveal new vistas at every turn.

Choosing just ten of these villages to feature in this book was a challenge. All of them are easily accessible by car from anywhere on the Côte d’Azur. Whether you’re staying in Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Menton, Vence, or any other place along the Côte d’Azur, there are perched villages nearby.

Visitors from all over the world come to explore these villages for their beauty and the unique experience they offer: a glimpse into a slower, more traditional way of life, where history and nature blend seamlessly.

The perched villages of the Alpes-Maritimes are more than just beautiful places to visit, they are living reminders of a rich past, a vibrant present, and an enduring connection between people and their land. Whether you come for a day or a week, they invite you to slow down, look around, and appreciate the timeless appeal of a world perched between sky and earth.

This guide (almost 100 pages long) highlights their history, architecture and heritage as well as offering tips on what to see in each village and also nearby attractions. You’ll also find lots of practical advice for visitors. Beautiful photographs bring these unique villages to life, making the book both useful and inspiring. You can use this book while exploring these villages or as a reference when planning future trips. And if a visit to France isn’t possible right now, you can still experience them “virtually” with this book as your guide.
